“*The Not Forgotten Cycling Crew.* Late July in the Cotswolds, fair blue skies gifted with loving care. A bunch strangers, bikes in tow, Wondering just how far we’d go. “The Not Forgotten” brought us there, With bikes, big smiles, and fresh country air. Some came for fitness, some came for fun, Some just prayed for more downhill than up to be done. Within a mile, the chat began, As only cyclists somehow can. From tyres and gears to aches and pains, And whether we’d survive the country lanes. Ten riders, ten stories to share, All proving life can take you anywhere. Different roads had brought us near, Yet somehow we all belonged right here. There was the chap from The Parts Guys, Our route planner, clever and wise. He promised “rolling” countryside A cyclist’s word for “there’s nowhere to hide!” Then our ride leader, cool as can be, With a South African twang full of glee. Never flustered, never stressed, Even when some of us needed… an unscheduled rest. And Alyson, smiling from ear to ear, The heart of The Not Forgotten here. Encouraging every pedal stroke, Even laughing at the terrible cycling jokes. The coffee stops became a delight, Where cakes disappeared at an alarming sight. Funny how calories don’t seem to count, When you’ve just climbed a ridiculous mount. There were hills that went on far too long, Yet somehow we all stayed strong. Breathing heavily, legs and arms on fire, Pretending, “I’m fine!” through sheer desire. By the end we weren’t quite the same, No longer strangers, just a first name game. Bound together by laughter and sweat, And a few wrong turns we won’t forget. So here’s to the Cotswolds, sunny and bright, To two wonderful days and every ride. To ten strangers who soon became mates, Despite arriving in questionable cycling states. Because the greatest thing we took away Wasn’t the miles at the close of day. It wasn’t the climbs or the views we’d seen… It was discovering that cyclists can talk continuously uphill while somehow still claiming they’re out of breath. By Kevin MacDonald. ©️”
